Sales from Pink Ribbon Sea Bags Result in $18,265 Donation to Maine Cancer Foundation

Sea Bags, Inc. recently presented the Maine Cancer Foundation with a donation of $18,265 raised through 2008 sales of the company's Pink Ribbon tote bag.
In 2007, Sea Bags and the Maine Cancer Foundation formed a corporate partnership, the cornerstone being the special edition Pink Ribbon Sea Bag. In that initial year, Sea Bags contributed $15,000 to Maine Cancer Foundation through this campaign. "Sea Bags' commitment to Maine Cancer Foundation is unmatched," states Joanne Jordan, Maine Cancer Foundation's Special Events Coordinator. "This is an amazing accomplishment from a small Maine company and it really sets the bar for others to aspire to."

Since 1999, Sea Bags, Inc. of Portland, Maine, has been making custom tote bags from recycled sails. Owners Hannah Kubiak and Beth Shissler and their employees have been personally touched by cancer. Being a Maine based company, it was important to Hannah and Beth to give back to a cancer organization that keeps all funds and grants within Maine.

"Each bag represents everything we are as a company," states Kubiak. "We give back to our community and support the causes we love. We believe in recycling because it works. We don't think being environmentally conscious is a fad - we think it's our responsibility."

"We are proud to have a global business in Portland, Maine where all of our products are made and we are passionate about keeping it that way," says Shissler. "Every bag we make has sailed around the world before it even leaves our shop, and we like that."

Sea Bags totes come in small, medium and large and a variety of designs and colors. Each one is designed and inspired from the sail itself and all vary in texture and fabric. All are durable, water resistant and washing-machine friendly. Most of the bags are white or off white dacron with a colored design on them and all sails - from canvas to Kevlar - are used. Each Sea Bag has rope handles that are hand-spliced at the Sea Bags shop in Portland, Maine - the splice is a nautical skill and what differentiates a Sea Bag. Since 1976, the Maine Cancer Foundation has supported cancer research, education and patient support programs throughout Maine.
