Maine Cancer Foundation's Pink Tulip Project
|
![]() Bulbs Available for Maine Cancer Foundation’s Pink Tulip ProjectCure breast cancer, one pink tulip at a time. Seem impossible? Tell that to the students in Laurie Bjorn’s class at Sanford Junior High School (SJHS). Eleven of seventy-seven school staff have had cancer, and over the past five years the school community has reached out to support these teachers and staff in unique and meaningful ways.
Last fall teachers and students at SJHS registered a Pink Tulip Garden through the Maine Cancer Foundation website (http://www.pinktulipproject.org/). They gathered together to dig a new garden outside their school and planted hordes of pink tulip bulbs. During the winter there were fundraisers in support of future gardens. All spring the students tended and watered the tulip patch. Finally, the entire school attended a dedication ceremony in May in front of their blooming tribute to cancer survivors. Many creative minds took the project one step further to produce their Pink Glove video. Watch it on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qe5-hxLbljY.
The 2011 season is underway, and 30,000 bulbs have been reserved for planting. Log on to http://www.pinktulipproject.org/, or call Maine Cancer Foundation at 207-773-2533 to place your order. If tulips not your favorite, deer resistant pink narcissus are also available through the MCF website; or mix and match for a spectacular array. Bulbs are planted in October, and bloom the following May. Plant a tulip and watch hope grow!
Founded in 2006 by breast cancer survivor Robin Whitten, the Pink Tulip Project raises money and awareness by planting gardens of pale pink tulips across the state of Maine. The project has raised over $150,000 since its inception, 100% of which has been donated to the Women's Cancer Fund at the Maine Cancer Foundation. Gardens are established to raise funds, create awareness and support for those who have been affected by breast cancer. Communities enjoy the benefits of these pink gardens for several weeks each Spring.
What began as one Portland garden has increased to 80+ gardens and thousands of pink tulips sprouting up and down the shores of Maine, as well as New York and Minnesota and several other locations. Over $50,000 was raised in 2009-10.
Since 1976, Maine Cancer Foundation has supported cancer research, education and patient support programs throughout Maine. Dedicated to advancing the path to a cancer free future, all funds raised remain in Maine. For more information, visit www.mainecancer.org or call 773-2533, or toll free in Maine 1-866-627-2411.
